Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, Colonia del Sacramento was recently declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Visit the old quarter with its narrow cobbled-stone streets, colonial buildings and reconstructed city walls. Visit the Plaza Mayor, Matriz Church, Bastion del Carmen, and Puerta del Campo which is the restored city gate and drawbridge.
