Punta del Este

Uruguay

An endless succession of small bays, beaches and promontories, set among hills and woods, stretches east from Montevideo, culminating approximately 139 km away in Punta del Este - a magnet for summer holidaymakers and sometimes referred to as the St. Tropez of South America. The gentle waters of the beaches on the bay side (Playa Mansa) of the peninsula are suitable for bathing and relaxing, while the rougher waters of the surfing beaches are on the ocean side (Playa Brava).

On the land side the city is flanked by large planted forests of eucalyptus, pine and mimosa. The main street, El Gorlero, runs down the length of the peninsula and is dotted with many restaurants and shops. For dining with a view opt for one of the restaurants along the boardwalk that runs down the bay side of the peninsula.

There is a golf course, two casinos and an excellent yacht marina and fishing club. There is good fishing both at sea and in the three nearby lakes and the Rio Maldonado. Boat trips can be taken to nearby Isla de Lobos and Isla de Gorriti. These enchanting islands are found opposite the large peninsula separating the two waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Rio de la Plata and are inhabited by one of the world's largest sea-lion colonies. They are well worth a visit.

Nearby you find Jose Ignacio, which not so long ago was a sleepy village of fishing boats and colonial hotels, 30 km from the bright lights of Punta del Este. Today, Jose Ignacio is still quaint and quiet, very much the alter-ego to Punta del Este but with a reputation now for sophisticated small hotels and excellent restaurants. Sunset strolls along nearly-empty beaches replace glitzy nightlife.
