Destination - West Falklands Mainland

This is a unique way to explore the Falkland Islands. These guided overland trips are designed to offer freedom, flexibility and plenty of time to explore and to meet the islanders and learn about the way of life on mainland West Falklands. Not only will you be touring completely off the beaten track, the stunning coastal scenery of West Falklands will simply take your breath away. No need to worry about missing out on wildlife as there are three species of penguins to observe on West Falklands and there is also the opportunity to view the graceful black-browed albatross at the colony located at Grave Cove.

The itineraries are guided by husband and wife team Peter and Shelley Nightingale who both grew up in the Camp (derived from the Spanish term Campo for countryside) and who today live on West Falklands. Peter and Shelley love the environment and freedom that Camp life offers and they enjoy sharing this unique environment and way of life with visitors.

Itineraries are tailor-made and created specifically to suit any special interests such as photography, walking or fishing.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1-2

Arrive on West Falkland on the FIGAS Islander aircraft or at the Port Howard Ferry Terminal.

Transfer to Black Shanty House, located at Fox Bay, where you can explore the sand beaches near Fox Bay Mountain, observe the wildlife, go fishing, visit the Old Post Office or just relax and enjoy a great central location.

Day 3-4

Transfer to Port Edgar where there are walking trails along the shore or the cliff tops with outstanding views. Visit the penguin colonies nearby and at the right time of year you could sight whales passing. During the summer months fishing, the farm life experience and shearing demonstrations are available.

Day 5 -7

Transfer to Port Stephens where you can explore the superb coastline of the South West and the unique rock formation known as Indian Village, Calm Head or visit the Gentoo, Magellanic and Rockhopper penguins, which are found breeding along the cliff tops and shore lines. Check out "Diane's Creations" 100% pure Falkland Island yarn which is specially made in the UK then hand-painted by Diane with beautiful colours.

Day 8 - 10

Transfer to Roy Cove in the north of West Falklands and explore the surrounding area. You can take an exclusive tour to Grave Cove at Dunbar and enjoy the stunning scenery and towering cliffs. Gentoo penguins are in abundance on the beach; residing on the cliffs are Rockhoppers and the majestic Black-browed Albatross (this is the only albatross colony on mainland West Falkland).

Day 11

Time to say farewell as your West Falkland adventure comes to an end. There are airfields at the main settlements where you can fly from or alternatively you can travel on the ferry to East Falklands if the service is operating to coincide with your travel date.

Accommodation

Included in the itineraries is accommodation at self-catering cottages throughout West Falklands. The cottages have single, twin and triple rooms sleeping up to five and they are centrally heated with 24 hour power, gas cooker, fridge and microwave. All bed linen, bedding, towels, crockery and cooking utensils are provided. Shared bathroom with bath.

Food

The Nightingales will supply all food using local ingredients and home grow vegetables when possible. They are able to cater for vegetarians and anyone who has medically diagnosed conditions and allergies. Please note alcohol is not provided so guests would need to self-supply.

Transport

The Vehicle used is a fully equipped 4x4 Toyota Land cruiser 80 series; complete with recovery gear and simple first aid kit. It is fitted with big off road tires and heavy duty suspension for a comfortable ride and ideally suited to Falklands conditions. The vehicle is serviced regularly and is maintained to ensure safety and reliability.
