The highest capital city in the world and the capital of Bolivia, La Paz is located to the north-west of the country, spreading out over 100,000 square kilometres. La Paz is no ordinary place. The airport itself is a staggering 4,000 metres above sea level with the city sitting in a canyon, 500 metres below. Surrounded by snow-peaked mountains, the city will take your breath away – literally. The Spaniards chose this odd place for a city on the 20th October 1548, to avoid the chill winds of the plateau, and because they had found gold in the Rio Choqueyapu which runs through the canyon.
