Helicopter Tours to Volunteer Point

The world famous King penguin colony at Volunteer Point is now accesible to visitors by helicopter!

In just 25 minutes you can travel in comfort from Stanley to Volunteer Point in the Falkland's first helicopter service dedicated to tourism.

This exciting experience starts with collection from your hotel in Stanley for the transfer to Stanley airport, journey time 10 minutes.

Taking off and departing from Stanley you will enjoy superb views of the worlds most southerly capital city.

On the journey to Volunteer Point you will have the opportunity to view Falkland stone runs, a geological feature unique to the Falklands and a result of the erosion of rock during the freeze-thaw cycles in the last Ice Age. The flight continues along Berkeley Sound flying over sheep farms, Long Island and Johnson's Harbour, and also the original settlement colonised by the French at Port Louis.

When you arrive at Volunteer Point you will be met by your guide who will accompany you on the short walk to the King penguin colony. There is also a beautiful white sand beach where you can watch the penguins on their journey to and from the sea. In addition to the majestic King penguin, Volunteer Point also offers the opportunity to see  numerous Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. There is always the chance a Southern sealion is close by in the surf.

The penguins demonstrate no fear of humans and it is possible, if you stay still, that they will be just as curious about you meaning that the countryside code which states you must keep a distance of 6 meters from the birds can be impossible to maintain. You may be lucky enough to spot passing Fin and Sei whales from December onwards and later in the season, Southern Right whales.

The duration of your tour is 2 hours with approximately 1 hour at Volunteer Point. The walking at Volunteer Point is moderately difficult over undulating grassland and a sandy beach. We recommend flat walking shoes or hiking boots to deal with the terrain. Weather conditions in the Falklands are very changeable and especially the wind can be a challenge for those not used to it. We recommend plenty of sunscreen as even when the sun is not out, you can still feel the effects of it and especially when combined with the wind. Jackets, hats and gloves are all a must together with a layers approach to clothes to deal with the constantly changing weather.

The individual weight limit for this tour is 120kgs/265lbs and the hand luggage limit is 5kgs/11lbs.
